Ask the Builder Internet Hub Case Study

July 12, 2005

ARTICLE SNIPPET - In this Internet strategy profile, Peter A. Schaible interviews Tim Carter of AsktheBuilder.com and discovers why and how he abandoned the subscription website model for the greater profits of the Google AdSense business model.

Tim Carter is a geologist by training, a building contractor by experience, a journalist by design and a storyteller by nature. (Thank goodness! There is much we can learn from him on many levels and interviewing him for this Internet strategy profile was a joy.) Owing to a lot of hard work and persistence, the course of his career has brought him to the enviable position of being a very profitable online publisher.

What he's learned along the way is a lesson for all website publishers: to constantly acquire new skills and embrace technological change. In the 1970s, after graduating from college with a degree in geology, Mr. Carter went to work fixing up old houses. Small jobs led to bigger and bigger jobs. He bought a house that was in really bad shape (the first of many), fixed it up and turned a profit.
