Six Usable Websites by Design

May 10, 2005

ARTICLE SNIPPET - In this website usability and design skill builder, Mequoda Library Editor Don Nicholas provides readers with some of his favorite information websites for teaching website publishers about website usability. Each is a complex site in terms of content that offers the user an effective interface that is functional, efficient, easy to learn, easy to remember, error tolerant and pleasing to the eye.

It is not a coincidence that each also uses a simple, clear business model that has allowed the website design team to clearly identify both user and business needs and build a website that balances both. Each website is a well-implemented user-centric design that can generate revenue to underwrite its on-going success.

While each site could be used as an example of any of these six key usability principles, I'll focus my commentary on one key principle for each of the six in which it excels. Remeber, this and all that he's written here are just one man's opinion. As we've all been told, beauty is in the eye of the beholder—once again pointing out the clear need to get user feedback on these as well as other more observable aspects of user-centered website design.
